"The American River Cances"

Title

"The American River Cances"

Subject

19th Century, Discrimination against Irish

Description

This political cartoon illustrates the fear and discrimination directed towards the Irish during the mid/late 19th century. The Irish's Catholicism incited some of the worst critique as demonstrated by the bishops drawn like alligators targeting the "good white American." Americans feared that the Irish and their Catholicism were invading the United States and threatening the American way of life.
