Grand Shiek Adept E. Mealy El

Title

Grand Shiek Adept E. Mealy El

Description

This photograph is a formal portrait of the Moorish Science Temple’s Divine Minster Grand Shiek Adept E. Mealy El taken in 1928.

Abstract

The portrait shows the ceremonial robes, turban, and accessories worn by high-ranking members of the Moorish Science Temple. These forms of clothing (as well as the term “Shiek” which is written on the photo itself) demonstrate the Orientalist influence on the customs of Noble Drew Ali’s movement–as well as these clothes and customs’ similarities to those of the Masons and Shriners (as seen in the previous photograph).
