This is a movie poster for the 1937 melodrama film, The Black Legion. This Warner Brothers production starred Humphrey Bogart (prior to his widespread fame) as a midwestern factory worker who joins the Black Legion. The film’s story is based on the murder of Charles Poole, a Catholic Works Progress Administration worker who was assassination by the Black Legion. Both the film (which was sued by the Black Legion for depicting many of its symbols and rituals) and the poster highlight the larger national perception of the Black Legion’s image and activities, which, although demonized, are portrayed as full of mysterious and fantastical “eastern” rituals.
