Title

Front Page of The Weekly Newspaper of the Moorish Science Temple of America

Description

This is a photograph of the February 1, 1929 front page of the “Moorish Guide”–the national edition of the Moorish Science Temple’s official newspaper. The headlines of the paper indicate that the Prophet Drew Ali has commanded his followers to elect Louis B. Anderson as the alderman for Chicago’s 2nd ward and “Urges Moors to Support Their Friend.” This paper (with Egyptian imagery of a camel and pyramids at the top) indicates the Moorish Temple’s outspoken efforts to influence politics to promote their goals of representation and equal rights, as well as their desire to be seen as a group of “citizens” promoting the interests and well-being of the community (like the Masons).
